Susan Louise Sallyards Zerby was born on February 26, 1950 in Los Angeles, California. She was married 45 years to Arthur Warren Zerby III who preceded her in death two years earlier. Susan passed away on November 6, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio surrounded by love ones.
Susan lived a life with sparkling humor, intellectual curiosity, and touched all who knew her with her unending kindness. The oldest of four children in the family of Richard and Marie Sallyards, she grew up in Alliance, Ohio and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and magna cum laude from Capital University Nursing School. After graduation, she taught at Capital followed by a 20 year nursing career specializing in oncology. She held many a hand as her patients neared the end of their lives and was often recognized by their families with immense gratitude.
Together with her husband Art, Susan was an active member of the Beer Can Collectors of America, known for her vast collection of antique beer trays. She was also a member of the craft and knitting group, Knit Wits of Columbus Ohio. An avid sports fan, she rarely missed watching a game of her beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns.
Susan is survived by her siblings: Scott (Jalene) Sallyards, Melinda Sallyards, and Ann (Jason) Hagan. Susan especially enjoyed spending time with her six nieces and nephews: Shaun Sallyards, Melissa (David) Schwartz, Matt (Jessica) Salle, Rachel (Mark Cunliffe) Salle, Danny (Marissa Cvelbar) Salle, and Drue Hagan. She delighted in her great nephew Alijah Schwartz.
In addition to her husband, Susan was preceded in death by her parents. A remembrance will be held later in Columbus, Ohio. Memorial contributions can be made in Susan’s name to the American Kidney Fund.
