Susan (Sue) Lynn Litfin, 77, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 31, 2024.
She is remembered with laughter and love by her husband of 56 years, Richard (Dick); her children, Bill (Elissa) and Jon (Molly); her mother, Louise (Kennedy) Cleavinger; her brothers, Steve (Susan) and Tim; and four amazing grandchildren, Stella, Lunar, Julian, and Oliver. She was preceded in death by her father, Billy Ray Kennedy.
Sue was born at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas, on December 29, 1946, to Billy Ray and Mary Louise (Schroeder) Kennedy. She attended Newton schools (Cooper Elementary and Santa Fe Junior High), graduating from Newton High School in 1964.
Sue had a love of early childhood and elementary education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Kansas State University in 1968, where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta social fraternity, the Kappa Delta Pi educational honorary, and a proud, lifetime member of the Alumni Association (in her later years, you couldn't miss the streaks of purple in her hair!). A lifetime learner, she was a Jennings Scholar at the University of Dayton and earned a Master of Education from Wright State University in 1989.While attending Kansas State University, she met Dick Litfin, the love of her life, and they were married on July 30, 1967, at Salem United Methodist Church in Newton, Kansas. After graduation, they relocated to Ohio, eventually settling in Beavercreek to raise their family.
Sue’s teaching career included time with Oakwood City Schools, Evergreen Children’s Center, and Beavercreek City Schools, where she retired in 2007. She was always up for volunteer opportunities as a Cub Scout den mother, swim team parent, cross-country parent, Sunday school teacher, or library volunteer.
Sue loved traveling with her husband and family throughout her life. This included numerous trips to all corners of the US and many European countries.
Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be near their family and to take on her favorite job as a grandmother, where she will always be affectionately known as “Gran.”
In Sue’s memory, take time today to hug someone, read a book, eat a homemade cookie, or enjoy a sip of Prosecco—all some of her favorite things. She leaves us happily, knowing she has the love of family and friends that have been with her on life’s journey.
Sue's life will be celebrated on Saturday, August 24th at 2 pm, at the Shaw-Davis Funeral Home, 4341 N High St, Columbus, OH 43214.
Instead of flowers, please consider a gift to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective (https://mofc.org/), Capital City Hospice (https://capitalcityhospice.com/), or your favorite local library.
