Dr. Stephen J. Buday, age 73, passed away on February 23, 2017. He was born in Cleveland, OH. He received his Undergraduate Degree from John Carroll University, his Degree in Medicine from The Ohio State University and completed his Post-Graduate Training at Mount Carmel Health. Dr. Buday practiced at Mount Carmel for 47 years. A majority of those years he practiced as a General Surgeon and transitioned to a Breast Dedicated Surgeon. He was instrumental in implementation of the option of breast lumpectomy for the treatment of breast cancer and initiated the use of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsies within the Mount Carmel System. He encouraged the use of nurse navigators to enhance the education, support and healing process of his patients. Dr. Buday was highly regarded by his peers and surgical residents who completed their training at Mount Carmel. He was an intricate part of the Surgical Residency Program and was dedicated to lifelong learning and teaching. He was a seven time recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award and received a Thomas H. Hartranft, MD Award in Recognition for Outstanding Leadership in Surgical Resident Education. Dr. Buday served as the Department of Surgery Chair in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was a Fellow, American College of Surgeons; member of multiple professional societies and served on numerous committees. In 1990, he was one of the founders of Metropolitan Surgery, an office practice which has continued to expand and thrive since. Dr. Buday was truly dedicated to the practice of medicine. He was extremely devoted to his profession and to providing the best care for his patients. He exhibited a caring environment for his patients in his kind, soft-spoken manner. His greatest joy in life was caring for his patients and seeing them living, happy, healthy lives after successful surgeries. Dr. Buday was preceded in death by his parents, George and Barbara Buday, and brothers, George and Jerry. He is survived by his fiancee, Pam Mascari, his daughters, Jennifer Calcara, Melissa Buday, Kate (Santana) Morera and grand-daughter, Lucia Morera; his sister, Gladys (Anthony) Zeller, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thursday, March 2 from 5-9 pm at Shaw-Davis Funeral Home, 4341 North High Street, Columbus, OH 43214. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 3 at Immaculate Conception Church, 440 E North Broadway, Columbus, OH 43214.
