HECKMAN
Stephen Lee Heckman died peacefully at Kobacker House Hospice on January 15, 2016, at the age of 76.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sally Perkins Heckman; children Stacia Lee Heckman King (Bryan), La Crosse WI, and Stephanie Lyn Heckman Prosnik (Jason), Powell Ohio, sisters; Lianne Douglas (Reverend Harry) of Crawfordville FL, Suzanne Heckman and Michael Grigsby of Columbus OH; grandsons, Nathan Joseph Prosnik, Stephen Vincent Prosnik and Carson Aaron Prosnik.
He is preceded in death by father Dayton Eyster Heckman, mother Doris Powers Heckman, uncle Willard Lee Heckman.
Steve was born on October, 20 1939 in Omaha NE. He was a 1957 graduate of North High School in Columbus and received his Political Science degree from The Ohio State University in 1962. He married Sally Perkins in 1962 and entered the United States Air Force where he served as First Lieutenant assigned to 320th Bomb Wing Intelligence Division, as Wing Photo-Interpretation Officer. Receiving highest attainable performance evaluations he was granted honorable discharge in 1965.
Returning to Columbus he joined the Heckman Insurance Agency with his uncle Willard Lee Heckman, owner of the agency started by his father, Lee Heckman. Receiving the CPCU designation in insurance, Steve acquired the agency in 1984. He changed the name to include Heckman Aviation Insurance Agency Inc. His primary focus was international aviation insurance. Clients and colleagues trusted and respected Steve’s integrity and professionalism. He retired in June of this year.
His children born in 1966 and 1970, remember him as a kind, loving, patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and was always proud and supportive of their choices.
He will be remembered for his quietly driven personality, quick wit, and basic kindness. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Steve has received excellent lifetime care from OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Care Departments as well as, The James Oncology Department and Ross Heart Hospital at OSU Medical Center. We wish to thank those medical professionals for their care, compassion and committment. We are eternally grateful for the exemplary dedication and kindness of the staff, volunteers and supporters of Kobacker House.
The family will plan a Celebration of Life on a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, consider volunteering time at your local hospital or hospice facility, or contribute to research with The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Association.
