Roger Saunders, a dedicated family man, esteemed accountant, and lifelong advocate for education, passed away at the age of 94. Born on March 31, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, Roger was the only child of John and Mary Saunders. His father, a World War I Veteran and roundhouse supervisor for the Erie Railroad, instilled in him the values of discipline and hard work, while his mother, an avid Bridge player affectionately known as Igene, encouraged his curiosity and love of learning.

Roger attended Cathedral Latin School in Cleveland, where he developed a strong academic foundation and a passion for sports, going on to briefly play football at Ohio State University. After serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict, Roger returned to Ohio to pursue his education, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in accounting. His tenacity and sharp mind led him to a successful career, first with Price Waterhouse and then as the founder of his own accounting firm, R.A. Saunders & Co., in Columbus.

A steadfast supporter of his community and faith, Roger was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a proud Republican until 2015 when he declared, “The Republicans have lost their soul and their mind,” a sentiment that reflected his deep commitment to integrity and principle.

Roger was married twice, first to Martha Joanne Fissel, with whom he shared two children, Mark and Megan. After their marriage ended, he wed Betsy Inch and welcomed his youngest daughter, Lauran. He was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time with his children and three grandchildren.

Roger was also a man of varied interests; he maintained an active lifestyle, enjoying tennis, skiing, and the outdoors well into his later years. He was particularly dedicated to supporting the education of special needs children, a cause close to his heart.

Roger is survived by his children, Mark Saunders, Megan Saunders, and Lauran Strawser, all of Columbus, Ohio; his grandchildren, Elena Saunders of Queens, New York; Elizabeth Saunders; and Charlie Strawser of Columbus, Ohio. He will be deeply missed by family and friends, who will remember him as a man of principle, wit, and unwavering love.

In honoring Roger’s wishes, a private family service will be held. His family invites those who knew him to celebrate his memory by supporting causes close to his heart and by carrying forward his legacy of kindness, curiosity, and compassion.
