Richard S. Mumford of Worthington went home to be with our loving Lord on January 11, 2017. Richard was born on December 16, 1949 to the late Esther L. Shilling (Miles) and Junior Mumford both of Roseville. Richard is survived by his loving wife Martha Mumford of Worthington, his daughters Kimberly (Kenny)Jones and Kilee (Jeremy) Claprood both of Columbus, five grandchildren McKenzi Grace (11) Kaden McCrae (7) Jones, Elizabeth Anne (7), Abbigail Marie (5), and Emilee Louise (5) Claprood. He is also survived by his brother Frank (Vicky) Mumford of Clearwater Florida and sister Cathy (Dave) Fleming of Crooksville Ohio, Mike (Claudette) Shilling special Aunts Audrey Smith, Lenny Slack and Florence Owens, and many special Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Richard was a 1967 graduate of Roseville High School where he enjoyed playing football and was active with the speech club winning a number of awards both at a state and local level. Richard proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corp. He held a number of positions throughout his life, such as steelworker, paramedic, volunteer firefighter, insurance salesman, mortgage broker, behavior health counselor, all of which he did with passion and commitment until his health forced him to retire in the late 90s. He then filled his days with fishing, fellowship with friends, caring for his family and nurturing his deep devotion for the Ohio State Buckeyes. From the Spring game to the Bowl games, he could be found on every Saturday at the Shoe, or mastering his skills as the best armchair quarterback around. His love ran deep and we have no doubt he bled scarlet and gray. (O-H-I-O)
Richard has been a “Friend of Bill W.” since May 2 1978, and considered his affiliation with the recovering community one of his life’s greatest blessings. He loved to help others and carry the message of hope to those in need. It was a labor of love that he openly welcomed with a warm cup of coffee, a smile and a shoulder to cry on for anyone who needed it.
His family was his life. He was a loving husband, a doting father, and an adoring Poppy. Rare were the times he missed a school or sporting event. He was a chauffeur, chaperone, babysitter, errand runner, nurse, chef, advisor, listener, cheerleader and fan. Whatever we needed he was there. He gave his life to his family and left a legacy of love that will be carried out in his honor. Our lives are forever changed now that he’s gone, but we are better because we were blessed to be his family.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the loving hands that cared for him throughout his 25 year battle with heart disease at the Ohio State Medical Center Ross Heart Hospital. The care and professionalism he received were extraordinary and he was grateful and considered his medical team part of his family. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make donations to the American Heart Association.
