It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Paul Mettke on December 5, 2024.
Rick was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Gary Mettke; his father, Gerhard Mettke; and his mother, Erna Mettke.
He is survived by his loving family, including his sister Karoline Bolin and her husband Dave; his brother Karl Mettke and his wife Sally; his sons Richard Mettke Jr. and Aaron Mettke; his daughter Brittney Mettke Powers and her husband Gerard Powers; and his precious grandchildren, Rhea, Milo, Luca, and Koda. He remained a close friend with his ex-wife of over 20 years, Lisa Mettke. Rick also leaves behind his beloved dog, Sophie, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who cherished him.
Rick led an extraordinary life filled with accomplishments. He proudly served his country for over 20 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant and earning numerous awards for his service. After retiring from the military, Rick continued to defend his country in the private sector, including a distinguished 20-year career at Battelle, where he served as Vice President for half of his tenure.
Rick was also an inventor, holding a patent for “On-Line Communication Terminal/Apparatus” (Patent 5,602,905).
As the son of immigrants, he took immense pride in his German heritage, often researching his roots, staying connected with his German relatives, and visiting them whenever possible.
An animal lover, Rick always had a loyal dog by his side, exemplifying the phrase “man’s best friend.”
Rick loved to travel and explored the world extensively. He embodied the mantra “work hard, play harder” and found joy in life’s adventures. He was a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan, holding season tickets for many years, and in the summer, he could often be found boating on the lake.
Rick’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 10 AM to 12 PM at Shaw-Davis Funeral Home, located at 34 W 2nd Ave, Columbus, OH 43201. Family and friends are invited to honor his memory. Flowers may be sent directly to the funeral home.
Rick’s legacy of hard work, love for family, and zest for life will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
