Richard Maclean

Mark “Richard” Maclean filed his final Flight Plan and departed this life on May 30, 2017.   Born September 15, 1953 in Columbus, Ohio, Richard grew up in Upper Arlington, attended The Ohio State University and was a fourth generation businessman with the family business, the J.S. Maclean Company.  Although lung cancer took Richard’s life, it can never diminish the effect of his warm and loving heart on those of us left behind. Richard’s birth and death dates are not nearly as relevant as all the days and nights he lived to the fullest between those two dates.  His signature mustache, distinctive deep voice and mischievous eyes brightened the lives of countless friends. They loved him for his lively sense of humor, the stories of how he survived his wild 20’s, and his all-in approach to life.

A man of eclectic musical taste, Richard could frequently be seen driving with the top down and listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Marshall Tucker, Smokey Robinson, George Jones, Vince Gill, or even Sarah Brightman.  He delighted spending time in the hills of southern Ohio, retreating to his Laurelville log cabin with Jody and bringing their dogs along to play outside. Richard was a straight talker whose word meant something, and his pleasures were simple—- a good day’s work in the garden with Jody followed by fish on the grill, a glass of Elmer T. Lee or a Black and Tan with a friend, reliving adventures and youthful escapades with Pao, savoring Faye’s chocolate chip cookies, hours at Jackie’s kitchen table deciphering life and sipping tea, time with the pets who responded to his gentle touch, swapping stories with a neighbor.  And no one appreciated or understood a well-engineered car as well as Richard.

Soloing at age 16, his lifelong love affair with flying was the source of much joy.  Richard’s years volunteering at the Gerlach Center with seniors were rewarding beyond measure.  He had the  unique ability to be playful and irreverent while still maintaining affection and respect for those he assisted.  These abilities led to an especially close relationship with his late friend, Dr. Ernie Kreutzer and his family and an enduring bond between these families.   Richard’s banter and quick wit will be missed by many.  He was playful to the end and cared deeply for those who helped him in his battle, especially appreciating the nurses in the Bing Cancer Infusion Center.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Moore Maclean and William Hayden Maclean.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Jodell “Jody” Lentz Maclean, brothers-in-law Steve (Chris) Lentz and Michael Lentz, nephews Zachary and Nick Morman, favorite niece Laurie (Chad) Dougherty, great-niece Lydia Dougherty, and great-nephew Shawn Dougherty and his lifelong friend and partner in crime, Paul Paoletti.  He will be forever missed by loving friend Jackie Kreutzer. Carry on my wayward son, for there’ll be peace when you are done, lay your weary head to rest…. surely Heaven waits for you…
