Richard was a veteran in the United States Marine Corp, having served in the Vietnam war as a plane technician. After being honorably discharged from the Marines with the rank of Sgt, Richard returned back to Columbus, Ohio where he continued his career in mechanics in application to diesel trucks. Richard achieved the status of Journeyman- Master Mechanic.

Richard was known for his love of music, motorcycling, fishing and camping; often times combining atleast two in some way. Those closest to him can recall the legendary camping trips he planned known as “Guy Thing”, which took place every summer during the '90s. The growl of Ford F150s, Harley Davidson Engines, and twelve string Guitars filled the night sky around a bright campfire as Alison Krause serenaded everyone from the speakers of his large boombox.

Richard Connell is remembered by all of his loved ones as a Man of God, supporting his family in every way possible and by singing praise as the main guitarist in the Chapel of Rest Chorus.
