Newatha loved hats and wore many hats throughout her lifetime. Named a “West Virginia History Hero” by the Division of Culture and History. Recipient of the “Living Legacy Award” from The Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Founding member of the Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation. Member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, St. Claver Catholic Church, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, The National Smart Set, the Douglass High School Alumni Reunion Committee. Business owner, community activist, and purveyor of education. Whatever she was involved in she gave it her all.
Newatha is preceded in death by her, parents, her first husband, Charles Johnson, second husband Clyde Perry and third husband Walter Myers. Sisters Julia Louvada Abbot, Rosalee Ramsey and JoAnn Abbott, and her brother Alfred Abbot, daughter Sheila Woolfork and son Charles Johnson Jr.
She is survived by her son Keith Johnson and his wife Sheryl, Daughter-in-law Patrice Johnson, her son Kevin Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her community and all the wonderful people she worked with over the years and called friends, they too are her family.
