Marie Claire Lucille Adams Meyer Obituary… on August 28th, 2024 Claire died peacefully with her family at her bedside- she was 91 years old. Born in Nashua, New Hampshire on November 18th, 1932, she was the second of three girls born to two French-Canadian immigrants, speaking French at home, and later learning English in school. She loved exploring the nearby woods, often playing the role of Tarzan with her friends, and in winter she loved to ice skate on the frozen neighborhood pond. She grew up during the Great Depression, having left school after the 9th grade to help with the family income. One of her first and favorite jobs was working at a mom-and-pop ice cream shop. She’d proudly describe how she made the best Ice cream Sundays and Coffee Frappes.
She met Virgil Adams at a roller skating rink near Boston, married at the young age of 20, and followed Virgil to a new life and home in Southern California. She was a wonderful wife and mother to her two children: Betty Ann Adams (Alexander) and Steven Roy Adams. She would take on new challenges with grace and ease learning how to manage apartments, Betty’s Bobby Sox softball, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts. She followed her childhood love of the woods, planning many family camping vacations throughout the western US. As a Girl Scout leader, she often took the girls camping and backpacking (dragging a young Steve along with them). By the time we were teenagers my brother and I had been to nearly all of the National Parks in the western U.S. She loved to decorate cakes and cupcakes, especially when volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. Through her many activities, she also met many of her lifelong friends.
Later in life, she married the love of her life, Duane Louis Meyer. They were married for 39 years. They square danced on a glacier, cruised the Alaskan shoreline, enjoyed weekends at casinos, and traveled with good friends to Europe. Back at home, she enjoyed her many nieces, nephews, two granddaughters, and two grandsons while always thinking of special treats or fun things to do with them. They came to love her very much and visited her often. Claire loved playing cards (cribbage, gin, and spades) with anyone she knew and looked forward to playing spades every Wednesday with her dear friends at the Westerville Senior Center. The staff at the Senior Center, the Assisted Living Residence at Riverview, and Bella Hospice gave her excellent care until the end. One of the nurses, Marie, would speak French to her and she would respond in kind. On one of her last days with us, she softly called out from her bedroom: “More Orange Juice ci vous plait.” And so we say to her: “Tous vos nous marquer Mama”… translation:
‘You will be missed.”
Claire was preceded in death by her grandson, Zachary Alexander, and her two sisters, Ann and Pat. Survived by her husband Duane Meyer, daughter and son-in-law Betty and David Alexander, son and daughter-in-law Steve and Eve Adams, grandaughter and life-partner Rebecca Claire Alexander and Seth Josephson, grandson Colin Adams and his lovely wife, Chelsea, and granddaughter Megan Lucille Adams.
