Marie Mayes

Marie Mayes, 92, of Columbus, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Sep 10, 2024 surrounded by her family. As a teenager, she began her work life by collecting admissions at the top observation floor of the LeVeque Lincoln Tower. Later, she worked for Defense Supply Center-Columbus and after 15 years of service, retired in 1994. She was very proud of being a blood donor, donating throughout her life.

Mom enjoyed chaotic family get-togethers, chocolate (in any form) and traveling. She was a generous baker and was the queen of Swedish Tea Rings, brightly colored iced sugar cookies and Tollhouse cookies. She was talented in sewing clothing and beautiful Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, loved chocolate (was this mentioned already?) and visiting with her friends. Mom was very appreciative of any kind gesture, never forgetting a thank you card, a simple thank you or a grateful smile.

She was tender hearted toward all living things, especially her many rescue cats.

She was born to Dixon Lee Mayes and Lucy Ellen (Sadie) Chandler Mayes on Feb 2, 1932 in Frazier’s Bottom, West Virginia. Marie had three daughters; Pamela (Terry) VanSky of Southern Pines, NC, Laura (Bob) Hegedus of Columbus, OH and Karen Morris of Bellbrook, OH. She was “Grandma Oreo” to her grandchildren; Silas (Masha) VanSky, Harrison (Rachel) VanSky, Maddie VanSky, Alexander Hegedus, Erica (Howard) Meck, Shea (Carter) Ervin and six great-grand children.

For the past 2 1/2 years, she resided at Wesley Glen, Columbus, Ohio. Our family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the many caring, skilled and loving staff, who became her (our) friends and extended family.

A private service will be held at Union Cemetery.
