Marcus was born August 18, 1961 in Simi Valley, California, the second child of Johnny Harrison and Emma Lee Turner; (who preceded him in death).
His family moved to Compton, Ca in the 70’s, where he attended Vanguard Middle School and Compton High School. He joined Double Rock Baptist Church in Compton where he committed himself to the Lord.
Marcus excelled in academics and sports. He played football as a defensive tackle for Compton High School. There he earned his nickname “Blade”. He received several honors, including presentations from the Mayor and City Council of Compton for his achievements. He received a football scholarship to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) where he attended college.
Marcus married his high school sweetheart, Karen, in 1985. To that union his son Marcus Edward Harrison, Jr. was born.
Marcus moved to Columbus, Ohio in the 90’s, and shortly after joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he was found to be invaluable in a number of areas. Helping around the church during the day, helping with the Saturday lunch program, he was also a member of the choirs and for a time Director of the Men’s chorus. Marcus loved to sing, which led him to NIA Performing Arts, and the Black Nativity, where he met and in 2013 married Ida Harper.
Marcus was a people person. He enjoyed working with children, under privileged youth and the elderly. He also couldn’t let those down on their luck struggle. There was always room in “the other bedroom” for those in need.
He loved his pets…Lady, Machette, Zari, and Bella.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his father Johnny Harrison (Los Angeles), son Marcus Harrison Jr. (Lilly) (Compton), sister Venus Marie Allen (Compton), Granddaughter Mayela Rose Harrison (Compton). Niece LaTasha Allen (Brandon) (Compton), Karen (K.P.) Everage-Bailey (Compton), Ida Harper (Columbus) and a host of church family and friends.
Memorial Service is scheduled for 2pm on Saturday December 28, 2019. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 720 Mt. Vernon Ave, Columbus Ohio 43203.
“Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.”
