On Monday, September 25th, Lemuel “Lem” Ferguson peacefully began his eternal rest while surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong resident of Columbus, Ohio, Lemuel graduated from East High School. In 1960, he began his profession as a member of the Columbus City Fire Department where he served for 35 years. Lem was a firefighter, an inspector, a recruitment officer and the head of the background investigation division.
Lem was active in his neighborhood, participating in the Deshler Park garden club and acting as a Block Watch captain with the Deshler Park Civic Association. He participated annually in the Community Night Out.
Lem and his family began their church life at Second Baptist Church under Rev. Leon Troy, Sr. There, he participated on both the Usher Board and the Board of Trustees. Thereafter, he became a member of First Baptist Church where he became actively involved in the church’s ministries. He was a member of the Board of Trustees and a leader of the Usher Board. He took great pleasure in teaching the usher teams the “niceties” of being a professional usher. His love of people led him to become a Greeter at First Baptist. He was always the first to welcome visitors and members alike.
Lemuel was preceded in death by his parents Lemuel and Helen Ferguson, the love of his life, Charlotte (Jo) Ferguson; one son; two brothers: Reginald and William Ferguson; one sister: Dorothy (“DJ”) Golston and two grandchildren: Joshua and Jeri Ferguson. He leaves to cherish his memory - his children: Lemuel “Skip” (Karen) Ferguson, Norina (Jimmy) Clark, Carla L. Ferguson, and Michael L. Ferguson; his grandsons: Taavin, Jamel and Jimmy (JD); his granddaughter: Taylor; great-grandchildren: Yondris, Yvonni and Morgan; sisters: Hertha Williams, Sharon Ferguson, and Jeannie Harriston; and many other dear relatives and friends.
