James (Popeye) Daugherty of Clintionville passed away, surrounded by those who loved him, at Riverside Hospital on June 6, 2021 after a sudden illness. He was born in Toledo, Ohio.
He came to Columbus as a young man on his own, seeking out jobs to support himself. He met a man who hired him to paint a sign on the front of his pizza shop on North High Street, in the Short North. One day while James was dressed in all white and a sailor's cap, a young lady named Nettie drove up in her car to that shop, and saw him up on a ladder in front. She said “ Who are you, Popeye the Sailor man?”. That name became the name to all who knew and loved him. Popeye and Nettie went on to be a lifelong friendship.
He went on to work at The Ohio State University cafeteria food service for 30 yrs. After retirement his greatest joy was spending time with Nettie working in their flower garden, watching OSU football and Cincinnati Reds baseball.
Popeye was a dear, kind and gentle man who will be missed by all whom he touched.
