Herbert Shoemaker III

January 21, 1955 — November 9, 2017

Herbert A. Shoemaker III (Herb), 62, of Hilliard, OH, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home November 9, 2017 after a long brave battle with cancer.

Born January 21, 1955 on the army base at Ft. Benning, GA, he was the oldest boy of 7 children to Herbert A Jr and Rosalie Shoemaker. He graduated in 1974 from Hilliard High School and went on to take college courses in law at Columbus State Community College. Herb had a big heart and loved helping people; he loved sharing his knowledge and expertise with woodworking and cars just about as much as he loved doing it. He had a passion and a flair working with his hands. He could make just about anything out of wood and could construct anything out of basic items, he thought outside the box. Herb had many jobs throughout the years, starting out working for his father's trucking company, to tow truck, to owning his own successful automotive repair shop, then after it's closing, still worked on cars out of his home. He loved working on cars; he was an amazing mechanic with a gift for auto repair. He could tell you what was wrong with a car just by listening to it. He was like the car whisperer.

Herb had a love of classic cars, classic country, classic TV, and his family, whom he loved more than anything; that was his heart and soul. Herb had two vices, his cigarettes and his coffee cup-aka his pacifier- always full of coffee. You'd never seen him without either one of those, or his hat. He loved playing horseshoes, fishing, and playing chicken with whoever would play. He had an incredible, slightly dirty, sense of humor. He could make anyone laugh, cheer anyone up; he was a great listener, a willing shoulder to cry on, and always had good advice.

Herb married the love of his life, Shari, on April 8, 1983. He always said he never knew what true love was until he met her. She was his sun and it showed whenever he looked at her. He always joked that she'd slowed down enough for him to catch her. They shared 34 wonderful years together, and had a daughter between them.

Herb is survived by his wife Shari of Hilliard, his sons Christopher Main of Columbus, Anthony Main (Tonika) of New Delhi, OH, Robert Main (Marie) of Columbus, daughter Jennifer King (Shoemaker) (boyfriend Michael Schmidt) of Whitehall, his mother Rosalie Shoemaker of Hilliard, sisters Theresa Hobson (Charles) of Marysville, Vicki Sparks of Hilliard, Christine Shively (Jeff) of Columbus, brother Harold Shoemaker (Emelia) of Columbus, his father and mother-in-law Fred and Virginia Wendel of Columbus. He had many, many neices and nephews who he loved with all his heart; his puppy Razzy, Michelle McBride (Jeff) of Zanesville and Nicole Noell (Walt) of West Mansfield whom he loved like his own daughters and treated as such.

He was predeceased by his father Herbert A Shoemaker Jr, his sisters Mary Stewart, Catherine Parrett; his nephew Justin Sparks and his hounddog Boomer.

In leiu of flowers, a GofundMe account has been set up for the family for final expenses and such. It can be contributed to through Shari or Jennifer's Facebook Page or PayPal at Shyone89@aol.com.
