Helen Bowles

Helen Victoria (Vickie) Bowles, 95, née  Eaves, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2023,  at  the Ashford on Broad in Columbus, Ohio.  Born on April 7, 1928, in Winston County, Vickie grew up in the midst of a large family where every child labored like an adult to pick cotton, grow and harvest food,  and maintain the home and farm.  As a spirited child who disliked the rigors of labor and dreamed of a larger life as seen in the picture shows of the day,  Vickie left home as a young teen to live in Mobile, Alabama, with a dear aunt who taught her to sew and told her that one day her hands would be what would feed her.  Although underage, to earn money she became a “Rosey the Riveter” in war-time Mobile and learned the skills to repair and create complex parts, solve problems, and measure up to exact standards.  She loved the excitement of this adult life.

Repairing airplanes by day and sewing at night taught her the skills necessary to earn her living as a talented seamstress who supported herself well into her eighties. She leaves behind the  artistic expressions of her talent: the bridal dresses, exquisite toss pillows, draperies, and custom clothes that continue to give joy to others.  She also leaves behind many people who loved her, which includes most people who ever met her.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Timothy Bowles, numerous brothers and sisters, and other beloved family members.  She is survived by her children Janie Dippold (David) and Jim Wilkes; grandchildren Kevin Dippold, Christine Dippold Harris (Ian), Jacob Paul Wilkes (Alyson), and Jenna Helen Wilkes Vance (Kevin); and great grandchildren Silas Benjamin Harris and Lilly and Harrison Vance.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on Friday, April 14, 2023,  between 2:00 and 4:00 pm at The Ashford on Broad located at 4801 E. Broad St.  A private burial in Dayton ,Ohio, will take place at a later date.
