Dorothy Horan

May 22, 1935 — October 29, 2019

Dorothy (Dottie) was born in Richmond, VA. May 22, 1935.  She graduated from St. Catherine’s in Richmond, VA and from Goucher College, Baltimore, MD in 1957.  She is survived by her loving husband Jim who she met and married on September 27, 1068 in Dallas, TX while she was working as an insurance Underwriter. They moved to Columbus in 1970 and have been married for 51 years.  She was preceded in death by her mother and father Katharine and Morris Smith (VA); sister Katharine Flower (OR) and step-daughter Dawn Turnquest (FL). She is survived by step-son, Kanitsu Darwin (SC); nephew Charles Little (OR); nieces Kathy Tepe (CO) and Dottie Pariot (NY); cousin Judy Weaver (CA) and her favorite cats Thunder Dick and Possum.  Dottie and husband Jim opened FinFair in The Continent in 1977 and operated it until it was sold in 1990.  For a period of time she was active in The League of Women Voters. She did volunteer work for Columbus Cancer Clinic; Meals On Wheels and served as Secretary for the Northland Community Council. As a member of the Central College Presbyterian Church she sang in the choir.  Dottie was also an active member of the Buckeye Boat Club and enjoyed boating in their pontoon boat on Hoover. In past years she was an avid gardener and also enjoyed cooking in which she excelled.  Collecting and repairing costume jewelry was a hobby that gave her great pleasure as she put much time into it. She and Jim enjoyed attending George Jones concerts and vacationing in wilderness areas of Canada for many years in the Fall.

A celebration of Dottie’s life will be on Thursday, Nov. 14th at Central College Presbyterian Church located at 975 S Sunbury Rd, Westerville, OH 43081.  Visitation at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Memorial service at 7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers Dottie requested that donations be made to: Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street - Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 for research to cure this insidious disease.
