Donald Joseph Welter
Donald J. Welter, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Arlington Court Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born 11-22-33 to Pius and Frances (Swartzmiller) Welter in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from University of Toledo in 1955 and shortly thereafter fell in love and married Joan (Gstalder) Welter, whom he called, “the most beautiful woman in the world.”
He was father to Joseph (Barbara), John (Patricia), and James (Maria), grandfather to Michael (Emma), Daniel, Mary, Patrick (Amanda), Jenna, Justin, Chris, and Jake, and great Grandfather to Emma. He is survived by his wife Joan, younger brother Tom, and older sister Regina. He is preceded in death by older sisters Jane, Dorothy, and Gracie.
A child of the Depression, he was a hardworking man who did jobs no one else wanted to do, and was known to say, “You don’t work, you don’t eat.” Even in his last years at Arlington Court, he always wanted to have a job to do so he could contribute.
He was a technical, detail-oriented person whose work took him throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East. He valued education and was proud that he helped raise two engineers and a doctor, who served their country. He was the happiest when playing catch or fishing with his 3 boys. Ornery, but he could be a charmer. He loved singing and music.
Thank you to the staff at Arlington Court, especially Lisa and Angie for their care and kindness.
The Old Lefthander has rounded third and has now reached home.
