David Prugh Nichol of Columbus, OH, passed away peacefully on May 10th, 2023 at age 70, after a long battle with Parkinsons and a recent pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
David was born on April 14th, 1953, to Marian and Charles Nichol in Pensacola, FL. Marian and Charles went on to have two daughters, Annie and Sara, David’s sisters. David graduated from North High school in 1971 with his best friends Carmen and Dave.
David then served in the Navy as a quartermaster on the USS Hull until 1975, stationed in Subic Bay in the Philippines and San Diego. After leaving the Navy, David owned Patterson Family Market, a neighborhood grocery store, from 1980-1988, then went on to work at Smith's Deli from 1988 until his retirement.
David’s daughter Katherine was born in 1995. In 1997, David met his partner Jackie, and the two were married in 2017. David and Jackie’s grandson Junior was born in 2019.
David was an outspoken advocate for military veterans rights, and successfully campaigned with his wife Jackie to win benefits for disabled Navy veterans. David’s favorite hobby was riding his bikes, and he competed in races several times. He also enjoyed wood carving, reading, listening to music, playing his guitar, collecting art, and playing board games and card games with his family and friends. David was also an avid OSU Buckeyes fan and loved watching sports of all kinds.
David was predeceased by his mother Marian, father Charles, and friend Carmen. He is survived by his wife Jackie, sister Annie and her husband Ken, sister Sara and her husband Joe, daughter Katherine, nephew Sam, niece Addie, cousins Tom, Kemp, and Steve, and friends Dave and Jack.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lifecare Alliance, Military Veterans Advocacy, the Columbus Foundation, or the Columbus Library, which are all organizations that David supported.
