David Hurd

November 25, 1938 — February 19, 2016

“Mister” David Bruce Hurd (Dave) of Ashville, Ohio passed on February

19, 2016 leaving behind to celebrate his life a loving wife, Kythryn Carr

Hurd; a brother, Jim Hurd (Jan); whom he shared a great passion for

football. Together they were stars of the Three Rivers High School

Championship Football Team of 1954. In addition, three wonderful children

survived him: Amy Thompson (Gary), Andrew Hurd, Jessica Hawkins

(Spencer) and the children’s mother Abby Hurd. He was fortunate to have

the love of six beautiful grandchildren: Nicholas Gerden, Eric Thompson,

Gavin, Sophia and Henry Hurd and Alexandra Hawkins. Also left behind,

his best friend of sixty-one years, Robert “Bob” Pietrzak, who said to speak

of Dave was to speak of love. Dave felt that was the greatest compliment a

friend ever gave him. In addition, many beloved nieces, nephews and friends

blessed Dave.

Dave was born in Three Rivers, Michigan on November 25, 1938 and

preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude "Trudy" Marie Hurd (Howell)

and Charles Matthew Hurd. Dave's stepfather, Henry "Hank" Gallagher,

passed away in 1979. Dave always had a warm spot in his heart for his

hometown of Three Rivers. He always considered himself a river kid and

said 30 minutes after he died he would still be a river kid.

Dave especially appreciated the love and affection shown to him by

classmates and teachers from both Three Rivers High School and University

of Notre Dame. Dave was known in his high school and college years for his

prowess on the athletic fields of Three Rivers Wildcats and the Fighting

Irish of Notre Dame. When he was inducted into the first Three Rivers High

School Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, he was called the greatest player to

ever play the game.

Dave was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. After college he

coached football at John Carroll University and the University of Notre

Dame. He was a manufactures sales representative, small business owner

and a substitute teacher.

Everyone who knew Dave knew him to be a gentle, kind and loving

man...He was our gentle giant.

A memorial service will be held in Three Rivers Michigan later in the

spring. In lieu of flowers, we welcome contributions to either of the

following: “Dave Hurd Memorial Suspense Fund” University of Notre

Dame, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556 or Three Rivers Community

Schools for the football program, to assist students with financial need, for

the purpose of playing football – Three Rivers Community School, Attn:

Business Office, 851 Sixth Avenue, Three Rivers, MI 49093.

The end on earth is the beginning is heaven, where Mister meets His Master.
