Dale E Shaffer

December 24, 1942 — August 9, 2024

On August 9th, 2024, Dale Eugene Shaffer passed peacefully surrounded by his family into the merciful hands of God.

Dale was born on December 24, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio to Leroy and Doris (nee Fitzwater) Shaffer. He was the middle of three children growing up on the southside of Columbus on Parsons Ave. After graduating from South High School, Dale enlisted in the Marines Reserves where he was stationed at the 88th Rifle Company in Columbus. For most of his life, Dale is remembered as a hardworking business owner who provided for his family, which began with helping his parents run the family business, Leroy’s Restaurant, near the Short North. Afterward he began a partnership with his brother, Rolin, owning a restaurant called Campus Pizza at Indianola Ave and Hudson St, later moving to a new location on High St. and opening Brothers Pizza. After selling these businesses, he was known by many working in the downtown district and at the Ohio State football games serving up brats and hots dogs with his food cart.

He loved his wife Loretta Shaffer (nee Ferlito) of 50 years who remained faithfully by his side to the end.

He also loved his five children Kim Shaffer, Mim Thurman (husband Richard), Steve Shaffer (wife Terri), Summer George (husband Rick) and Mandie Shaffer.

His legacy lives on through his 10 grandchildren whom he adored: Luke, Samantha, Jordan, Casey, Daniel, Sisilia, Caden, Ellie, William Dale and Kaia. And his four great-grandchildren: Elijah, Layla, Holly and Theodore.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents Leroy and Doris Shaffer, his brother Rolin Shaffer, his sister Jeanie McKinlay, and his grandson Michael George.

A service is being planned for Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Shaw-Davis Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10am, followed by an 11am funeral service. A burial service will be held at Saint Joseph Cemetery immediately following the service.
