Clarence “Clem” Carl Chaffee, 92, was reunited with his beloved wife Popy Golemes Chaffee in eternal rest on November 18, 2023. Clem was born in East Liverpool, OH to his parents Robert Chaffee and Hilda Baxter Chaffee (both deceased). He was also, proceeded in death by his brother William Chaffee. Clem’s life was shaped by the great depression and the early death of his father while Clem was in high school. Clem worked at the East Liverpool Review newspaper but after graduation he moved his mom to Columbus to pursue a college education and see more of the world. As fate had it, he landed a job at Battelle Memorial Institute where he met the love of his life Popy. Battelle paid for his Anthropology degrees at The Ohio State University and afforded him many work assignments that took him around the world. Clem’s 29 years at Battelle took him to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, to name a few). When not on assignment, Clem and Popy vacationed around the world.
After his departure from Battelle, Clem landed a job at The Conference Board in New York City. He became the Executive Director of the Board’s Conference Division, which he enjoyed for several years. Eventually, Clem started his own very successful business, Management Information Networks, Inc. (MIND) and later worked for FEMA on 82 different disasters.
Popy and Clem spent holidays and vacationed at their favorite place, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park in Florida until Popy’s death. Clem returned to Columbus, OH where he lived out his final years with friends. Special thanks to his friends Hidegard Ampssler, Ben and Karen Freudenreich, Susan Mynyk, Jan Christian-King, and the Hanhilammi family. Also, special thanks to Bella Care Hospice, Mill Run Care Assisted Living Center, Arlington Court Memory Care nurses and aids. Per Clem’s request there will not be a service but interment will be at Union Cemetery.
