Betty Hirsch

April 30, 1930 — January 5, 2025

Betty Cornell Hirsch passed peacefully at home with her children, grandchildren, & great-grandchildren on Sunday, January 5th. She was almost 95 years old. She was preceded in death by many family members and friends, most recently her husband, Joe, and nephew, Tom. She is survived by brother-in-law, Chuck, sister-in-law, Mary Bell, children Mary Beth (Franco), Nancy (Doug), and Joe (Laura), grandchildren, Marco (Ivana), Alan, Clare (Jake), Allie (Justin), Lola, and Max, eight great-grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews.

Betty and Joe met at a college dance and were married for 66 years. They moved 8 times over the years. Each time Betty readily made new friends, while maintaining cherished long-term friendships from her childhood in Uniontown, PA, her college years at Pennsylvania College for Women (Chatham University), and as a young mother in Pittsburgh. She loved people and was loved by all who knew her. Betty earned her BS in Nursing and started her career in pediatrics. After the children were grown, she returned to nursing, eventually working as the floor shift supervisor at an Orlando Hospital. She stopped working to care for her mother and aunt, who lived with her and Joe for twenty years.

Together, Betty & Joe loved socializing, good food and travel. Highlights were trips to Italy, France and Spain, a cross-country car trip in their 70s, and regular family trips with the Lofquist cousins to Canada and the Bahamas.

Always a leader, Betty served in her Presbyterian churches as an Elder in the Session, sang soprano in choir, and was an active Circle and Sunday School member. She enjoyed social clubs, such as Apple Core when they lived in Apple Valley. When Betty and Joe moved to Columbus to be near their daughters, she joined Maple Grove UMC, the denomination of her youth.

After Joe passed, Betty moved to Claremont Retirement Village, and enjoyed playing cards, singing in the choir, parties, movies, and mostly friends. Judy, Michael, Doris, Nancy and others, were kind and generous friends as she grew frail. Betty moved to her daughter’s home and was surrounded by loving family in her final months. The family is grateful for the angels who loved and helped care for Betty -Sahro, Halimo, and Asiya with Enhance Home Healthcare, and the wonderful hospice care from Ohio’s Hospice and nurse Rachel.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Maple Grove United Methodist Church and visitation with family will follow the service.
