Bernice Marie Garrett age 87 born on February 28, 1933 in Franklin, Ky passed away on May 21, 2020 at Riverside Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband James P Garrett Sr. her parents Adolphs O’Lee and Eliza Jane Barnett, siblings Clemeth Garcia, Rev. Arlent Barnett, Ruth Randolph, Quentin Barnett, Rev. Aniza Barnett, Osceloa Barnett, Rev. Wilbur Barnett, Rev. Arvenell Barnett, Lee Barnett, and granddaughter Melendez Bibb
She graduated from Franklin Simpson High School. She retired from the Columbus Board of Education, and was a Red Cross volunteer, instructor, and disaster relief worker for over 25 years.
Bernice was an avid fisherman and bowler. She was a member of the Ester Chapter of the Eastern Stars, the first recipient of the Cleo Hale Award, and as a child, sang with a radio gospel group in Nashville, Tn. She was a member of 7th Avenue Community Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children Dorothy Bush, James (Kim) Garrett Jr., Derinda Garrett, Kathy Garrett, and Bonita Garrett. Grandchildren Leland Garrett, Damon Bush, Bernice Garrett, Angelia Garrett, James Garrett III, Ramondo Bibb, Aisha Garrett, Derrick Bush, Jennifer Bush, and Taylor Smith. Brother Kermit Barnett of California, Special cousin and childhood best friend Vergie Lee Carver of Henderson, Tn., her nephew and pastor, Rev. Roscoe Robey Jr. and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A public service will be held at a later date.
