Barbara J. (Holko) Thomas March 27, 1944 – November 12, 2024
Barbara J. Thomas, age 80, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on November 12, 2024, at The Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. Barbara was born on March 27, 1944, in Warren, Ohio, to the late Steve and Helen (Dubrosky) Holko. She grew up in the Newton Falls area, where she shared a close-knit bond with her family. The Holko family enjoyed growing a vegetable garden, attending St. Joseph Catholic Church, cooking together, and spending time with local relatives. Barb was a proud graduate of Newton Falls High School, where she graduated in 1962. During her high school years, she was active in many activities: cheerleading, Future Teachers of America, Y-Teens, Girls State and various school plays. She went on to earn a degree from Kent State University and later earned a Master's degree in education from Ashland University. On November 9, 1968, Barbara married the love of her life, Lynn Thomas, and they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary just days before her passing. Together, they raised two daughters, Bethany and Andrea, and built a life full of love, laughter, and family memories. Barb’s 28-year teaching career was marked by her passion for making learning fun and meaningful for her students. Most of her career was spent at Vaughn Elementary School (LaBrae schools), where she formed lasting relationships with her students and their families. Her kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on those she taught. In addition to her love of teaching, Barb had a deep love for her family and cherished the time she spent with her six grandchildren. Known as “Barbie” she took great joy in their lives, often traveling with them to the beach, making crafts, shopping, and creating special memories. Barb’s greatest pleasures were always found in the company of family and friends, with whom she shared many happy years. She is survived by her devoted husband, Lynn Thomas; daughters Bethany (Alan) and Andrea (Chris); her six grandchildren: Brady, Ruby, Libby, Ivy, Maddie and Emerson; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in Newton Falls, Illinois and Pennsylvania who were dear to her heart. Barb was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia Moorehead. In honor of Barb’s memory and her lifelong commitment to helping others, the family requests that donations be made to the Viking Pantry at LaBrae Local Schools, which provides food assistance to LaBrae students in need. Contributions may be sent by mail to LaBrae Local Schools, 1001 N Leavitt Road, Leavittsburg, OH 44430, with "Viking Pantry" written in the memo. For additional information or alternate donation options, please contact Amy Frederick at amy.frederick@labrae.school or by phone at 330-898-0800. In accordance with Barb’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.
