Angela Irene (Howison) Nicholson Passed away on April 8, 2017, at age 67 while at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She resided in Pataskala, Ohio with her husband of 47 years, Warren Baxter Nicholson. She is preceded in death by her parents Edwin Maxwell Howison and Donna Irene Howison, and her sister, Melanie Hockenberry.
When Angela fell ill she was teaching Art full time in the Columbus Public Schools to grades K-6. Angela graduated from Columbus Whetstone High School in 1969, earned an B.A. of Education with a Fine Arts minor from The Ohio State University in 1971. She earned a MA in Montessori Education from Chaminade University of Honolulu in 2009.
Her career in education began at the Fairfield School for Boys in Lancaster, Ohio. While working with troubled youth she became interested in the philosophy of Marie Montessori and moved into early childhood development. She began an independent Montessori school, Montessori Children's House where she and a co-owner helped the development of many pre-kindergarten children. Her commitment to the Montessori philosophy led her to become trained as a teacher of other teachers in the Montessori methods, and when she moved to Michigan because of her husband's job requirements, traveled extensively as a Montessori Teacher educator.
After a stint in El Paso, Texas, she returned to Columbus where she was involved with a local private school and then moved to the Columbus Public School system.
Angela was a person who truly enjoyed life. She was a social person who was always the spark of any gathering. She was adventuresome and creative. Early in her married life she and Warren owned and piloted their own air plane. They spent many summers at the Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in in Oshkosh, WI. They also traveled extensively by car to many parts of the country.
In addition she was active in the bell choir for many years at Maple Grove Method Methodist where she was "the life of the party" She had a great love of music. She became quite proficient at quilting. Many friends and family members have enjoyed the fruits of her quilting labors. We will all miss Angela, her quick smile, her hearty laugh, and her kind spirit.
