Alfred Jay Lomax Sr.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) Alfred J. Lomax, Sr., who carried those words in his soul throughout his life, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 30, 2026, at the OhioHealth Hospice House in Columbus surrounded by his loving family. He was 73 years old. Alfred (Bimbo, Bim, Alfie, Al) was born at Mansfield General Hospital to Luther R. and Betty Backensto Lomax on February 1,1953 and lived his whole life in the Lucas/Mansfield area. Alfred was a 1971 graduate of Lucas High School. He married the love of his life, Patricia (Patti) Butler also in 1971, and together they raised four amazing children. They celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 24.

A former employee of the Ohio State Reformatory and Richland Water, Alfred hit his stride when he and best friend, Roger Steward, began over-the-road truck driving. He drove semis throughout the United States, retiring from Crete Carrier Corp. with the One Million Mile Safe Driving Award. His many grandchildren love to remember traveling with “Papaw” for big adventures in his truck during the summer months.

A life-long Baptized and Confirmed member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lucas, Alfred served several terms on Church Council and taught the Adult Sunday School class every other Sunday for nearly 40 years and was often a lector. He was known for ending each church congregational meeting with the move to end the meeting and go eat with the church family. His true gift, however, was his voice. From a young boy in grade school throughout his whole life, he loved to sing and lit the world with song. He starred in musicals at school and at church over the years. He led the men in the choir and they rocked. Some of his favorite anthems were “The Holy City,” “Easter Song,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “The Lord Is My Shepherd and Keeper.” He and buddy Gary Bobst sang many duets over the past 20 years. The choir and congregation will sorely miss him.

Alfie loved to camp and fish. He loved to cook and eat. He had competitions with his sons and sons-in-law on who made the best spaghetti. He loved family get-togethers and game nights, especially playing euchre. Kelly’s Island was the place to go for summer vacations with the children. He was also a fan of Ohio State, where he attended as a college freshman, and the Cleveland Guardians. If you wanted to make him mad, just call him by his childhood nickname (Bimbo or Bim.)

Alfred is survived by his wife, Patti, son Michael (Rhonda) Lomax, son Alfred Jay (Jamie) Lomax, Jr. (Tonya Roark), daughter Tricia (Jeremy) Stepp, daughter Tonya (Bryan) Howell, sisters Carol Tridico and Mary Lowe, sisters-in-law Marilyn Paramore, Joanie Wallace, Jacqui Jones, Kathy Beaudreau, and Tammy Howell, and special brother-in-law Rick Butler. His grandchildren include Mitchell (Jamie) Lamp, Nick (Katelyn) Lamp, Rebecca (Tyler) Moore, Brittany (Nik) Young, Caleb (Stephanie Eastham) Lomax, Caylee (Scottie Hamilton) Lomax, Michael Roark, Nick Roark, Chase Stepp, Cruz (Madison) Stepp, Chance (Kayla) Stepp, Alexis (Irvin Sherred) Schafer, Tessa (Jacob Burrows) Berry, Madisyn Howell and Natalee Howell, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather John Ditwiler, his brother Dennis Paramore one year ago, his brothers-in-law John (Jay) Tricido, Denzil Darrel Butler, Carl Wallace, Larry Beuadreau, Joe Jones, his sister-in-law Patty Butler, and his infant great-grandson Corbin Lomax. He was also survived by his best friend Roger Steward, friend and aide Stephanie Edmiston, and his beloved kitty Sassy.

As per Alfie’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Lucas Community Center, 252 West Main St., Lucas, Ohio on September 12, 2026, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. for, as per his wishes, a celebration with good food, good friends, and family. Come share your memories and love with the family at that time. The family would also like to thank OhioHealth Hospice House staff for their wonderful care of, not only Alfred, but the family members that stayed and everyone that visited.
