SCHAEFER

Lawrence “Larry” Karl Schaefer of Dublin, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at the age of

88. He was born on December 13, 1927, to parents Lawrence Schaefer and Genevieve Sitton Schaefer in

Cleveland, Ohio. After completing high school, he joined the United States Navy and then earned his

Bachelors of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He

married Yvonne Goble of Kent, Ohio in 1950, and they divorced in 1977.

Larry moved his family from northeast Ohio to Dublin in 1960, where he started his business as an

independent sales representative for industrial heating components, Process Heating and Control. He

quickly became involved in several community activities, including a short career as a mayoral

candidate. He was one of the founders of Dublin Youth Athletics and coached baseball and football

teams for many years, as well as leading the Dublin Community Church Softball team to several church

league championships. In later years, he was very active as coach, player, and referee in the Columbus

Ski Club's adult volleyball league. He joined the Masons when he was young and was a senior member of

the Grand Lodge of Medina, Ohio.

His life-long love of music, especially jazz, made him encourage his children to play instruments in bands

in the Dublin schools, as well as various community orchestras and ensembles. In 1996, he joined the

band that eventually became Larry Schaefer’s Swing Machine. While his involvement in recent years had

waned, the band plays on with his youngest son as a member.

Larry is survived by his five children: Gini (Jim) Busser of Summerville, South Carolina; Duncan Schaefer

of Hollywood, South Carolina; Kate Schaefer (Glenn Hackney) of Seattle, Washington; Geoff Schaefer of

Dublin, Ohio; and Meghan (Jim) Hull of Loudon, Tennessee. His ten grandchildren are Brad Weiss of

Arlington, Washington; Shannon Weiss of Camby, Indiana; Katy (Jon) Kvassay of Los Angeles, California;

Amy Busser of Lakewood, Colorado; Graham Schaefer of Hollywood, South Carolina; Audrey Schaefer of

Brooklyn, New York; Mary Hackney (Peg Solonika) of Portland, Oregon; Ruth Hackney of Seattle,

Washington; Jaime (Andrew) Huffaker of Biloxi, Mississippi, and Ryan Hull of Loudon, Tennessee. He is

also survived by his sister Carol (Glenn) Arthur of North Carolina as well as 9 great-grandchildren and

several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends, musicians, and the public are invited to attend a memorial service and concert on May 20, 2016,

from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Dublin Community Recreation Center, 5600 Post Road, Dublin, Ohio.

His Swing Machine will honor him with some of his favorite numbers, and family will receive visitors.
